Delighted that my photo weaving entitled, Finding the Yellow is part of the Gallery Cafe’s Light and Dark exhibition in Bethnal Green.
Finding the Yellow uses weaving techniques to bring together small slivers of yellow from across a number of photographs taken over many years, bringing them together into a visual collage that re-examines a singular vision of the past. Exploring notions of memory and tactility, the photographic and the textural, this works explores memory as a palimpsest, as a reworking of past narratives.
Huge thanks to curator Virginia Orr for including this piece in such a wonderful and varied exhibition.
About the exhibition:
Light and Dark offers an opportunity to explore the contrasts between illumination and shadow, not just in a physical sense but also in emotion, symbolism, and storytelling.
In painting, the dramatic use of light and shadow can draw attention to specific elements or create a sense of volume and realism. In photography, lighting is crucial for setting tone and guiding the viewer’s eye. Even abstract and conceptual artists explore these contrasts to evoke atmosphere or comment on deeper psychological or social themes.
It encourages viewers to look beyond the surface and consider the balance of opposites that shape our world.
