Delighted that my photo weaving book entitled, Yellow is part of the zine library at Sunny Bank Mills, as part of their latest exhibition Broken//Makeshift.
Yellow was created by using my personal archive of film photos, trawling through hundreds of photos to find images that contained the colour yellow. The embroidery on the cover encompasses the intention behind the work, to find ‘light’ – visually captured by the colour yellow – in places and memories where I had not seen it before. The work reflects a journey of recovery, a re-weaving of memories and the past to create something new and brighter. This piece is tactile, the fabric pages inviting touch in a way that’s reminiscent of children’s board books, a way of reconfiguring notions of memory and growth.
About the exhibition:
‘An exhibition that celebrates contemporary craft by finding the beauty in everyday objects and exploring how our emotional attachment to them can survive a break, fracture or tear. The show and surrounding programme highlights modern and historic methods of mending, inviting a conversation about how our relationship to things has changed since the popularisation of mass-production and the recent resurgence of upcycling, repurposing and repair.
Craft is a powerful tool to unpack our understanding of self through object.
Some works in the show explore the idea of the maker themselves being ‘broken’, in a bid to further the dialogue around visibility of disability in contemporary craft. We are working with artists who have lived experience of disability or have self-identified with the theme.
We are keen for audiences to leave the exhibition with an unexpected feeling of hope and newfound appreciation for the items they spend their lives with.’
